Hello! My name is Tiffany and I adore art.
Read on to know more about my approach to art and what it means to me.
There is a certain mystery and magic in giving form to something that otherwise only exists in the mind. That magic has always enthralled me; I am determined to express the intangible, invisible, and unspoken in a way that is somehow felt, seen, and heard. I believe in the notion that any artistic vision already imagined is, in a sense, already real — and therein lies an almost unadulterated, intoxicating potential to realize.
My Passion: Why Art Captivates Me
One might think that the skill of visual arts involves creating an illusion, regardless of whether the illusion is classical or abstract or surreal in style. And that might be so. But what I love about art is that no illusion can be created without first holding a magnifying glass to reality, examining the complexity of what makes it real in the way that we understand it, and then deliberately subverting or staying faithful to these things we perceive to be true when portraying their image.
The visual arts is about representing and thus revealing fundamental truths about ourselves, our societies, our world, and indeed reality itself; the degree to which an artist may play with accuracy in this representation is itself a comment on what we perceive to be accurate. Therefore an art piece will never not be a representation of what is real. It will never not be a mirror to humanity’s version of truth — of the fallible, brilliant, fervent human perspective that connects us all. This is why I adore art. It is, to me, the pinnacle of human expression; it is proof of how the experience of being human is a shared one.
My Perspective: The Power of Visual Art in Society
Visual art holds much more power than it is given credit. It has the power to discuss, without words, pervading social issues that are difficult to speak about aloud. It has the power to place you in the perspective of another, be it the artist’s or that of the subject within an artwork, and prompt you to experience a new frame of reference from which the world suddenly seems strange and unfamiliar. It has the power to change how one thinks.
It is not only a matter of seeing through another’s eyes but of thinking in terms of their most deep-seated and vehement thoughts; of experiencing reality in the way another experiences it. And it is that very opportunity to grasp another human perspective — to recognize aspects in common with and differing from our own, broadening and enriching our perceptivity and awareness — that is so valuable.
When thought of as a medium to present the perspective of any individual reality, the visual arts’ ability for creating quiet commentary can be a remarkable catalyst for awareness and, ultimately, change and progress. Images reflect and shape a society, and I view art as the intentional creation of such images.
My Philosophy: Art as Speech
I find that whenever I paint and create, it is because I am compelled to voice a story and become the voice of another. I express stories based in the realities of society around and beyond me, or based on a particular individual who lived or lives through the ramifications of issues that are important to me. Always, I create from the perspective of the subject of the work, trying my best to create a quiet, respectful dedication to their story. I aim to pare away noise and give form to their voice in a manner worthy of being its messenger.
I believe that the perception of beauty in art is a visceral reaction; beauty is found in the poetry of purpose. My art pieces do not necessarily belong to myself, but more so to their subject, to their purpose and message, and to those individuals whom the subject speaks on behalf of. Whether the voice that I hope is heard through my art is my own or another’s, the visual arts is, to me, an extension of the human voice.
